Prevention
There was not much done to prevent the spread of disease during the Civil War. In fact, many doctors were uneducated in the matters of disease prevention, so instead of stopping it from spreading, they transferred it to more people. Doctors completely disregarded the fact that they should take careful measures during surgery, but instead handled people with the least care as possible. They needlessly amputated limbs to "prevent" any future infection, and many soldiers lost faith in the credibility of doctors very quickly. Many times, soldiers who had their limbs unnecessarily amputated died soon after. However, quinine was soon discovered, and it was used to prevent and treat malaria. Quinine is an anti parasitic medicine which is actually derived from tree bark.
