Diseases
The cause of death among many soldiers during the War was because of various diseases. In fact, 2/3 of the soldiers fighting lost their lives due to diseases. There are many reasons for this, starting off with the fact that soldiers did not get daily showers or any resources to clean their pots or pans. Also, there was nowhere to put garbage, so it would rot in the camps and nobody could dispose of it. There was no clean water to drink, and most of the food available was spoiled. On top of this, there were many infectious bugs, and weather and fighting wore down the soldiers so much that they could not fight off any diseases or viruses. During the Civil War, the disease that killed the most soldiers was Dysentry. Dysentry is an illness that spreads through contaminated food and water, so it seemed obvious that this would kill many soldiers, considering their living conditions. Some other major diseases that killed many soldiers were Ague, Yellow Fever, Malaria, Scurvy, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, and Smallpox.
