Battlefield Hospitals
The hospitals that soldiers were treated at were either makeshift tents in camps or nearby hospitals that were very poor. There was no organization, and almost all of the necessary equipment for treatment was not available. These hospitals were described as dirty and crowded, and the conditions were highly unsanitary. Soldiers who had limbs amputated were given nothing to stop their pain, and instead had to endure a long and bumpy ride to the hospital. Infection and disease were everywhere, and doctors and nurses risked becoming sick themselves just by helping those in need. The conditions in hospitals were horrible, and caused the deaths of many soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy.
